VHSECO produces these handcrafted birdcages, made by the skillful hands of village artisans. Vác Village, also known as Kẻ Vác or Canh Hoạch, is a famous birdcage crafting village located in Dân Hoà Commune, Thanh Oai District, about 35 km from central Hanoi.
A Poetic Introduction: "In her blue sash, should she come to Canh Hoạch with me? With less farmland but abundant crafts, Which craft do you cherish more, the paper fans or the birdcage weaving?"
Bird enthusiasts are well-acquainted with Kẻ Vác birdcages. The craft has a long-standing tradition, passed down through generations. Villagers still proudly recount the story of Vác birdcages winning medals at exhibitions in Hanoi during the French colonial era.
The raw materials must be high-quality forest bamboo sourced from northern provinces like Hòa Bình and Cao Bằng. Upon entering the village, the sound of cutting and splitting bamboo fills the air. Yards are filled with unfinished birdcages. From the elderly to the young, from young men to women in their twenties, everyone works swiftly and skillfully, each handling a task according to their abilities.
To meet the criteria of durability, beauty, and elegance, Vác Village artisans meticulously go through several steps, including soaking, boiling, smoking, oiling, and shaping the bamboo slats for the bottom, rings, doors, perches, and decorations. The most challenging part is carving the intricate patterns on the rings. Using a small knife and their talented hands, Vác Village artisans create exquisite ring carvings.
